Oldham 36 Doncaster 16

18/ 7/2008

OLDHAM'S Mick Nanyn became the new club's highest pointscorer in a season on a night when the Roughyeds put their visitors to the sword.

Going into the match with 310 points for the season, Nanyn struck six penalties to take him past Pat Rich's record of 320 set in 2001.

Having led 10-8 at half-time, the Roughyeds notched 24 unanswered points in the second half in front of 2,806 supporters who braved the evening's heavy drizzle.

The conditions wrought havoc all night as both sides struggled to keep possession, Oldham noticeably having problems with Luke Gale's restart kicks.

Nevertheless, they romped into an early 10-0 lead with Craig Littler and Daryl Cardiss both crossing, adding to Nanyn's fourth minute penalty.

However, Oldham were to lose Littler and Ian Hodson before the break with a fractured jaw and nose respectively and, consequently, they were put under the cosh as half-time approached.

A series of penalties saw them forced to defend five consecutive sets, ending when Peter Green dived over and Gale converted.

Gale then added a penalty to bring Doncaster to within two points at half-time, only for Oldham to score four tries in 15 minutes to end the game as a contest.

Danny Halliwell touched down from James Coyle's kick, Tommy Goulden recorded a quickfire double and Luke Sutton went over from close range, despite harbouring doubts as to whether he had actually got the ball down.

Nanyn converted all four tries to leave Oldham in total control with a 34-8 advantage before Doncaster staged a revival of sorts with tries for Wayne Riettie and Corey Lawrie.

In the knowledge that one more converted try would give Doncaster a bonus point, Oldham sensibly elected to kick for goal when given a late penalty.

Their decision paid off as Nanyn successfully landed the kick, ending the Yorkshiremen's hopes of ab onus point and giving himself the new club record in the process.
