Oldham Roughyeds 40 Gateshead Thunder 16

Gavin Browne
30/ 6/2008

PAUL O'Connor stole the show as the Roughyeds condemned their visitors to only their second reverse of the Co-operative National League Two season.

The full-back registered a hat-trick of tries as Oldham ran in a total of seven to leave Gateshead contemplating defeat and the loss of top spot to Barrow.

Throw in sinbinnings for Oldham's Neil Roden as well as Thunder's Benjamin McAlpine and Dylan Nash and the 823 spectators at Sedgley Park could claim they had full value for their money.

Oldham scored 20 points in each half with O'Connor, Roden, Danny Halliwell and Matty Brooks crossing for first-half tries, followed by further efforts from O'Connor (two) and skipper Rob Roberts.

Mick Nanyn chipped in with half-a-dozen goals while Gateshead's replies came courtesy of McAlpine (two) and Neil Thorman, Daniel Russell landing two conversions.
