Oldham Roughyeds 24 Rochdale Hornets 14

TWO tries in nine minutes for Rochdale took the shine off Oldham's day despite the Roughyeds winning their fourth match from five league games.

Leading 24-4 with 12 minutes remaining, the Roughyeds gifted tries to Alex Brown and Chris Campbell and let the Hornets depart with a bonus point in the process.

A typically feisty derby saw no quarter asked or given with the officials speaking to both sides on more than one occasion, but only one player - Hornets' Dave Newton - sinbinned.

Mick Nanyn and Carl Sneyd both exchanged a pair of penalties to leave the game level at 4-4 midway through the first half. Nanyn's third penalty, allied to Tommy Goulden's converted try, saw Oldham 12-4 ahead at half-time after an opening period during which Oldham did plenty of attacking without any reward.

Newton's 10 minute rest just after the break saw Oldham extend their lead when Rob Roberts crossed, Nanyn converting. Nanyn's fourth penalty, along with Danny Halliwell's try, saw Oldham 24-4 ahead and looking well set for a comfortable victory.

Hornets had other ideas though as Brown was too strong for Lucas Onyango before Campbell collected Phil Joseph's weak grubber kick and raced 95 metres for a converted try.
