Deakin delight at progress

OLDHAM coach Steve Deakin was a 'very proud man' after watching his side defeat higher league opposition to reach the last eight of the Northern Rail Cup.

A crowd of 966 saw the Roughyeds defeat National League One side Whitehaven 16-6 at a snowy Boundary Park.

Tommy Grundy, Paul O'Connor and Neil Roden scored tries for Oldham, Mick Nanyn adding two goals, with Whitehaven replying through Saia Makisi's try and Marc Bainbridge's conversion.

Deakin said: "I thought our defensive effort was outstanding. I thought we kept our discipline and composure as well as putting a lot of pressure on a team that took Widnes to the wire last week.

"I don't think the score flattered us in any way, shape or form. How well did we play? Well, I thought Whitehaven were very good and to beat them 16-6 shows the level of performance we had to come up with.

"We failed to complete four of our first five sets but once we started holding onto the ball, our plan was to move the ruck around, but the boys said the ball was slippy and it was harder to do as the game progressed.

"It (the weather) made it little more difficult to control the ball and play as expansively as we did but our defending in the second half was the best part of the game."
