Oldham Roughyeds 16 Whitehaven 6

THREE first-half tries sent the Roughyeds into the last eight of the Northern Rail Cup at a snowy Boundary Park.

Assisted by Oldham mistakes, the Cumbrians dominated the opening 10 minutes and took the lead when Saia Makisi crossed for a try, Marc Bainbridge converting.

However, the Roughyeds got back into the game and levelled when Tommy Grundy touched down and Mick Nanyn converted.

Having seen Whitehaven's Spencer Miller sinbinned, Oldham took immediate advantage when Paul O'Connor went over on the left-hand side.

From the restart, a sweeping move ended with Neil Roden going over, Nanyn converting to make it 16-6.

With Miller still off the field, Whitehaven lost another player to the sinbin when Carl Sice was given 10 minutes' rest before half-time.

Defences ruled for the rest of the afternoon though with Oldham losing Simeon Hoyle to the sinbin for 10 minutes in the second half.

However, the Cumbrians could not take advantage and Oldham booked their spot in the draw for the quarter-finals.
