Oldham Roughyeds 40 Hunslet 12

26/ 3/2008

SEVEN tries saw the Roughyeds record the perfect start to their opening home league game in Co-operative National League Two.

They had to do it the hard way early on when a rash of penalties against the home side saw Matt Bramald kick the Hawks into a 6-0 lead.

Although the Roughyeds did not get on the scoreboard for the opening 20 minutes, once they did they were clearly the better team of the two.

Jason Boults, with his third try in four games, Phil Joseph, Craig Littler and James Coyle all scored first-half tries for the Roughyeds, and with Mick Nanyn rested, Gareth Langley added four goals to make it 24-6 at half-time.

Hunslet’s only try of the afternoon came early in the second half when Dean Townend capitalised on Stuart Young’s high kick to score a try converted by Bramald.

However, it was the Roughyeds who registered the game’s final points with another three tries.

The outstanding Adam Robinson crossed for the first, followed by Langley, before Neil Roden crossed near to the posts.

Langley added two conversions, finishing with six from seven attempts on the day and a personal haul of 16 points as Oldham recorded win number three in eight days.

The only sour note for the Roughyeds came when substitute Said Tamghart was placed on report following a tackle on Ben Walkin as he approached the Oldham line.
