TEN tries for the second consecutive match saw the Roughyeds book a spot in the last 16 of the Northern Rail Cup.

Five tries in each half at Sedgley Park meant that Oldham finished second in their group behind Salford City Reds, giving them a home game against Whitehaven in the first of the knockout stages in the process.

With Tommy Goulden, Tommy Grundy and Warren Stevens left out, Oldham took a third minute lead when Jason Boults went over from James Coyle’s pass

Mick Nanyn, who added six goals on the day, was the next Oldham player to cross as the Roughyeds bossed the possession and field position.

Danny Halliwell was the next Oldham player to go over, followed by Nanyn’s second try as the Roughyeds opened a 22-0 lead.

Swinton pulled some points back when Rob Ball crossed, only for Marcus St Hilaire to make it 26-6 with Oldham’s final try of the first half.

The damage continued in the second half when Coyle crossed for his eighth try in the last five games before Phil Joseph was rewarded for his good display by going over for the seventh try of the afternoon.

Although Swinton registered their second try of the afternoon courtesy of Gary Sykes, there was still time for Oldham to end the game with three tries in the final eight minutes.

Craig Littler went over, while Alex Wilkinson notched a quickfire double as the Roughyeds prepared for Good Friday’s opening league game in the best possible fashion.
