'Good, but can do better'

Gavin Browne

OLDHAM coach Steve Deakin felt there was room for improvement after watching his side beat Rochdale Hornets 38-8 at Boundary Park.

Although the Roughyeds defied strong winds to outscore their neighbours by seven tries to two, Deakin felt there were elements of their performance that needed to be worked on.

He said: "I thought it was an ugly win. Conditions dictated it wasn't going to be champagne-style football but we scored seven tries against a team who beat us six weeks ago.

"I think it's an indication of how much progress we're making that we didn't necessarily play at the top of our game but won pretty comfortably.

"We said before the game we needed to keep it simple and grind the sets out but I thought we over-elaborated at times and didn't play the conditions good enough - it's part and parcel of the learning process.

"We were a little bit inconsistent in the defensive area. I thought the tries we conceded were a little bit soft and I'm disappointed with how we conceded the two tries - one was from a scrum and the other a short pass.

"Having said that, I thought Rochdale tried hard and played some good football against us, but we got what we wanted to get out of the game."
