Oldham Roughyeds 38 Rochdale Hornets 8

THE Roughyeds put one foot in the last 16 of the Northern Rail Cup as seven tries gave them a comfortable victory over the visiting Hornets.

Although blustery winds did their best to ruin Friday's match as a spectacle, they did not prevent Mick Nanyn from registering 14 points at Boundary Park.

Four of the game's nine tries came in an 11-minute period during the first half, Nanyn seeing his 10th minute effort quickly cancelled out by Chris Spurr. However, tries from Rob Roberts and Neil Roden, both of which were converted by Nanyn, put Oldham 16-4 up.

That lead was extended moments before the break when Craig Littler went over, Nanyn's conversion making it 22-4.

Having seen former Roughyed Wayne Corcoran reduce the deficit with a 55th minute try, Oldham pulled away with three tries in the final quarter-hour.

Nanyn's break ended with Paul O'Connor crossing, Marcus St Hilaire crossed for try number six of the night, before James Coyle darted over with four minutes left.

Nanyn's pair of conversions wrapped up proceedings, leaving Oldham requiring two points from their final two group games to progress.
