BATTLING in vain: Oldham attempt to halt Salford prop Phil Leulaui at the Willows

Salford City Reds 40 - 12 Oldham
13/ 2/2008
THIS was a game of two halves with Oldham entitled to feel unlucky not to be level with their ex-Super League hosts at the break.
Salford had opened the scoring with a gem of a try from James Jiminez, converted by Andrew Ballard, but Oldham were quickly on level terms as Mick Nanyn scored a terrific try following some excellent build-up play, adding the conversion for good measure.
A try from full-back Paul White, again goaled by Ballard, eased the home side ahead before Oldham again brought the scores level.
Craig Littler capitalised on an error to touch down from James Coyle’s speculative kick, Nanyn adding the extras.
However, the first-half scoring came to an end when Salford took the lead just before the break as quick hands sent Stuart Littler over with Ballard again adding two points.
The second half began with Salford scoring two quick tries, the first coming from ex-Waterhead youngster Jordan Turner as a result of John Wilshere’s kick.
That was quickly followed by a flowing three-quarter move which ended with winger Matt Gardner going over.
Both tries were converted by Ballard who finished with six goals on the night.
Although the Roughyeds held out for a further 15-minute spell thanks to some excellent tackling, it was the superior fitness and a touch of the class from the full-timers that brought two further tries for Stuart Littler, one of which was goaled by Ballard.
From Oldham’s point of view, coach Steve Deakin must have been pleased with the first-half performance, as well as their attitude in defence during a difficult second period.
Nanyn followed up his try and two conversions with a tremendous 40-metre chase to prevent a certain Salford score, while Coyle, Simon Baldwin and Neil Roden were all outstanding.
Despite the result, Oldham must feel confident in their quest for the National League Two title as Salford undoubtedly have two or three players of genuine class.
Jiminez and Richie Myler were both outstanding as the pace and superior fitness of the full-time outfit finally proving decisive.
There must also be a word of praise for Oldham official Robert Hicks who had an excellent game and displayed some consistent decision-making throughout the 80 minutes.
