Oldham 22 Swinton Lions 20

4/ 2/2008

JAMES Coyle's 75th minute try saw the Roughyeds open their 2008 Northern Rail Cup with victory after Swinton had looked set to be party- poopers.

Having led 16-0, Oldham conceded 20 unanswered points to leave the majority of the home crowd stunned into silence at a freezing cold Boundary Park.

Tries from Rob Roberts, Marcus St Hilaire and Mick Nanyn, the latter adding two conversions, had put Oldham well clear with 20 minutes gone.

However, Said Tamghart's departure to the sinbin allowed Swinton back into the game with a try from Bruce Johnson, goaled by Richie Hawkyard, nephew of former Oldham player Colin.

Converted tries from Marlon Billy and Rob Ball put the Lions 18-16 ahead before Hawkyard's penalty extended that advantage to four points.

He spurned another penalty with 12 minutes remaining before Coyle had the last word, dancing his way over from close range with Nanyn adding the conversion to give Oldham victory.
