Touring tales

LOCAL author Michael Turner has gone international with his latest book looking at the history of Oldham RLFC.

‘Kangaroos, Kiwis & Roughyeds’ is an account of Oldham’s fortunes in matches against the touring New Zealand and Australian teams down the years.

The book features match reports for all the games, complemented by appropriate pictures.

Every match that Oldham has played against international teams is covered, going back to a game against the New Zealand Maoris in 1889, right up to the Roughyeds’ match against a Manly district team in 2003.

It is Michael’s second book, following on from his work ‘Oldham RLFC: The Complete History’ as well as being the third tome published on behalf of Oldham Rugby Legaue Heritage Trust, of which Michael is a director.

Among the games featured are the 22-16 defeat by Australia in 1986, as well as the 1997 World Club Championship and a review of the games against the various French teams.

The hardback book, which contains 225 A4 colour pages, costs £20 with all profits to be used for the future workings of the Heritage Trust.

  • MICHAEL will be signing copies of the book at Waterstones in the Spindles between 11am and 2pm on Saturday.

    Copies are available to buy at Waterstones as well as through the Roughyeds.
