Hamer's top trophy

CHADDERTON’S young professional Martyn Hamer beat some top local stars to win one of the Manchester and District Alliance’s most coveted trophies.
The Robert Wax Trophy, now in its second year, has found what seems to be a permanent home at Dunham Forest, where Robert Wax so enjoyed his golf.
With a full Manchester Alliance field of 152 players, it was no surprise that Hamer, the assistant pro at Ellesmere, had a nervous wait in the clubhouse after carding an individual score of 43 points and a score of 45 points with his amateur partner Steve Hindle.
Both of the scores were good enough to take both the individual Professional Prize and the Pro-Am prize on card play-offs.
Second place went to Cheadle professional Anthony Millar, playing with his amateur partner Nick Fletcher from Lymm, while the Withington pairing of Steve Marr and Kevin Hawkins finished third.
The Am-Am Section produced clear winners as the Turton pairing of Steve McDermott and Neil Fairclough finished three shots clear of the field.
Golfers at Saddleworth raised funds as they teamed up for their captain Bernard Woodhead’s charity day.
Leading in with 43 points were home star Dave Park and Oldham’s Eric Charles.
Also in the prizes were Ray Dean and Andy Clarke who won a cpo on 41 from Martin Orme and Chris Stanley.
Saddleworth ladies were in LGU action and in a close finish Kath Whitehead took top spot after a cpo on 74 from Barbara Mitchell.
Brookdale golfers played their third winter qualifier and topping the divisions were Gary Lever (65) from Peter Lloyd and Ian Reeves (66).
The big gun in division two was John Peace on 64, two shots clear of Neil Buller and Keith Power.
Sam Gilbey was the main man at Oldham with the top score of the day as he posted 62 to win division two from Peter Dowd (66).
In division one Martin Lewis was also impressive with his 64 seeing him home by a shot from Terry Garrett and Sam Lunt.
It was a family affair at Crompton and Royton as father and son combo Mick and Jordan Flint led in with 41 from Danny Heap and Keith Ward, both 40.
Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue at all clubs until next March.
