Front pair set to shine

LATICS boss John Sheridan believes strikers Craig Davies and Michael Ricketts could prove one of the deadliest front pairings in League One.

Both have impressed in Athletic's five pre-season games, Davies netting three times and Ricketts twice.

The duo obliged with all four goals as Latics saw off Sheffield Wednesday and Macclesfield Town by 2-0 scorelines.

Those performances led Sheridan to forecast goals galore once they become accustomed to each other's styles of play, hopefully starting with Saturday's opening league game against Swansea City at Boundary Park.

He said: "They're both new to each other. Hopefully they'll both know what they're doing on Saturday.

"Both goals at Macclesfield were good finishes and that's what you want from strikers. It gives you confidence and I think we'll score goals with the players we've got in the team."

As the Advertiser went to press, Sheridan was still looking for a new left-back after Kelvin Lomax (groin) departed the Macclesfield game at half-time.

Neil Kilkenny's proposed move from Birmingham remains up in the air with City boss Steve Bruce waiting to bring in another midfielder.

Sheridan said: "Hopefully we can get it sorted as soon as possible but I'm comfortable with what I've got in midfield."
