Duo urging supporters

26/11/2008

JOHN Sheridan and Mark Crossley have both called upon Latics’ home following to get behind the team as they aim to break into the League One promotion places.

Last Saturday saw 254 away fans witness a display which, while it was not great, yielded three points at Southend.

However, some of the recent home displays have seen a section of fans become frustrated at Athletic’s difficulties in breaching opposition defences.

Crossley said: "When tension sets in, everyone can feel it all around the ground. When the crowd gets tense, the players get tense. We need the crowd to get behind us and stop moaning. We need them right behind us. The away support is different class, you have the hardcore fans, but we need the home crowd to get right behind us. Most of them are but when things are tough, that’s when you really need them, not when you’re 2-0 up."

For his part, Sheridan believed that although fans had a right to say what they thought, it is down to his players to show character.

Sheridan added: "I’ve been moaned at as a player for playing poorly but sometimes you have to get on with it. We didn’t play well on Saturday and if that was at home, I think a lot of people would have got on our players’ backs. It’s only one or two though but they’re entitled to their view and opinion. We have to be strong as characters and as a team."
