Southend 1 Oldham 2

Fred Austin
22/11/2008

TWO goals in four thrilling minutes turned the tables on in form Southend as Oldham stormed back to pick up their fourth away win of the season and the second on the trot.

The home side, who had lost just one of their previous 13 games, went in front after 53 minutes when James Walker volleyed home from 10 yards after a superb piece of attacking opened up a huge gap.

But Oldham, the comeback side of League One, did it yet again and bounced back to level in the 67th minute.

Top scorer Chris Taylor attacked an Andy Liddell corner and headed in from four yards for his eighth goal of the season.

Southend had no time to recover before they were hit again.

Lee Hughes took his goal tally to seven in the 71st minute with a cracking angled drive in the box, following a deep free-kick from Danny Jones.

Three vital points for John Sheridan’s battlers – just four days after being dumped out of the FA Cup by struggling Cheltenham – saw them keep the pressure on the teams at the top although it wasn’t good enough to put them back into the top six.

Oldham have found the going tough recently, a poor run which has seen them drop from the top of the table down to seventh.

But they showed some satisfying signs, particularly in the second half, that they are on their way back.
