Northampton 0 Oldham 1

A 75th-minute penalty from Andy Liddell gave Oldham their first away win in five games and ended Northampton’s unbeaten home record.

The 34-year-old sent keeper Frank Fielding the wrong way to claim his sixth of the season and three points for the Latics.

Earlier the visitors had been left to curse a rash of missed chances which all went begging, with Lee Hughes was the biggest threat.

He had a 20-yard shot saved after 12 minutes and had the ball in the net three minutes later - only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Another chance fromt he striker hit the side netting before he had another ruled out for offside on the half hour in a tight decision.

Hughes set up Darren Byfield in the 60th minute but he was denied a debut goal following his month-long loan move from Doncaster when Fielding pulled off a superb save to keep out his close range drive.

Oldham, who have taken only nine points from nine games, stepped up the tempo to go all out for a winner.

It finally came when the busy Hughes burst into the box and was tripped by defender Jason Crowe. Veteran Liddell settled the nerves with his easily converted spot-kick.

But the contest ended in controversy as it went into injury time when Hughes was sent off after being shown his second yellow card.

Yet another farcical decision by a none football playing referee !

Watch the replay carefully, you will see the Northampton player slip just before he attempts to turn inside of the incoming Lee Hughes, to me it looks like Lee Hughes has been an absolute sportsman by trying to avoid either colliding with him or kicking him, putting his hands on the fallen players shoulders to stop himself.

The ref sees this as another foul and his secind yellow card, so he gets a Red and yet again we have another player unable to play due to a suspension.

The sad part of this is..the fanspay to see their star players throughout the entire football leagues...those stars are part of teams who are also made up of stars, when this happens the only people deprived are in fact the fans...the club still have to pay the players wages, yet the player can't take part, in the end it contributes to the loss of fans from the game.
