Sheridan facing more selection headaches

8/10/2008

INJURED Latics defender Stefan Stam was set to undergo a scan yesterday as medical staff attempt to ascertain the extent of his knee injury.

The Dutchman went down in the very last seconds of training last Thursday in a seemingly innocuous incident, ruling him out of the 3-1 derby defeat at Stockport on Friday.

Now the 29-year-old, who stayed relatively injury-free last term, was preparing to visit a private hospital for a scan on the joint as part of a further programme of investigations.

Reuben Hazell and Richie Byrne teamed up in central defence in the absence of Stam and skipper Sean Gregan, with new boy Daniel Jones slotting in at left-back.

Manager John Sheridan will have another selection headache this weekend as regular right-back Neal Eardley – as well as the suspended Gregan – will miss Sunday’s home game against struggling Hereford United due to international duty.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Jones, signed on loan from Wolves last Friday, has already revealed that he is looking to extend his one-month deal.

Jones, who had been a target for boss Sheridan since last season, was delighted to make the move to Boundary Park.

"I jumped at the chance and I will be doing my best to stay longer," he said.

"Oldham look a side that is going places and I like the way they play football.

"It gives me the chance to go forward which I enjoy."

Sheridan couldn’t hide his disappointment after his side’s first League defeat of the season at Edgeley Park on Friday.

He said: "It wasn’t to be I suppose.

"But I am disappointed with the manner in which we conceded the three goals in the second half.

"The match was there for the taking for us.

"We’d been in a great position at half-time, but we let it slip."
