Frustrating night

3/ 9/2008

LATICS boss John Sheridan admitted to mixed feelings after watching his side beaten on penalties by Morecambe in Tuesday’s Johnstone’s Paints Trophy tie.

A 5-4 penalty defeat following a 1-1 draw meant Athletic exited their second cup competition within the space of seven days following last week’s Carling Cup loss at Burnley.

If the defeat was not bad enough, striker Lee Hughes faces a test on a groin injury which forced him out midway through the first half.

Sheridan said: "I think we shot ourselves in the foot. The chances we had, we could have been 3-0 up in the first half. I was very pleased with how we played in the first half, but I think we got a bit sloppy at the end. I’m sick of saying it but we must take care of the ball, I don’t know how many times I shout it during a match. Some of the decisions they make on the pitch beggar belief."

Having bossed the first half without converting any of their multiple chances, Latics took the lead when Danny Whitaker sidefooted home in the 56th minute. However, the lead was cancelled out nine minutes later when a well worked move ended with Stewart Drummond firing home Diarmuid O’Carroll’s cross.

With neither side able to break the deadlock, the game went to penalties where both sides were level at 3-3 after the regulation five.

Whitaker, Kieran Lee and Craig Davies found the net for Athletic, Neal Eardley and Chris O’Grady being denied by keeper Barry Roche and the woodwork respectively.

Although Kelvin Lomax scored Latics’ sixth penalty, Lewis Alessandra’s miss enabled Andy Parrish to send Sammy McIlroy’s visitors through to the next round.
