OLDHAM boss John Sheridan has warned his defenders they need to wake up after their 3-0 defeat to Burnley in the Carling Cup.

Despite a 100 per cent record in the league, Sheridan is concerned about the back line which is leaking an average of more than a goal a game this season.

Dutch defender Stefan Stam and rookie keeper Greg Fleming were drafted in the starting line-up but a lacklustre performance saw them crash out of the competition at Turf Moor by the same scoreline for the second season running.

Sheridan said: "All the goals were soft and very poor on our behalf. People weren't switched on at crucial times and that's cost us in the end.

"Burnley didn't have to work hard for their goals and I'm gutted for the fans because they were brilliant."

Sheridan is now looking for a response for Saturday's game at Colchester and is expected to bring back Lee Hughes after he hit a hat-trick in last weekend's 4-0 triumph over Cheltenham.

"The main thing is to look ahead and concentrate on getting a positive result at Colchester on Saturday," he said.
