A repeat of last season

27/ 8/2008

LATICS were unable to make amends for last season as they exited the Carling Cup at the second round stage with defeat at Burnley for the second consecutive year.

Having been beaten 3-0 at Turf Moor last time, John Sheridan’s team were beaten by the same score on Tuesday evening.

True to his word, Sheridan had rung the changes with Greg Fleming, Stefan Stam, Kevin Maher, Deane Smalley and Chris O’Grady brought into the starting XI.

It was the Clarets who drew first blood as they opened the scoring with 12 minutes gone through Chris McCann’s first goal of the season.

Danny Whitaker and O’Grady both fired off target for Latics as they sought a way back into proceedings before the interval.

Owen Coyle’s side doubled their advantage 18 minutes into the second half when Martin Paterson scored his first of the evening.

Sheridan attempted to liven things up midway through the second half, bringing on Hughes, Alessandra and debutant Kieran Lee for O’Grady, Smalley and Maher.

However, it was Paterson who had the final say with 11 minutes left, scoring his second of the night – and fourth in two Carling Cup games this season – to send Burnley into round three..
