Latics to keep feet on the ground

JOHN Sheridan is imploring everyone not to get too carried away after watching his Oldham Athletic side take top spot in Coca-Cola League One.

Lee Hughes' hat-trick and Danny Whitaker's first goal for the club handed Latics a 4-0 win over Cheltenham Town at Boundary Park, making them the only team in the division with a 100 per cent record from three games.

However, Sheridan is aware that record may be tested in the next few weeks with trips to Colchester United, Tranmere Rovers and Hartlepool United in their next four league games.

He said: "People can say what they want, no way will I get carried away although it's good looking at the paper when you're top of the league.

"We've got off to a great start - played three won three - but we have 46 games. No-one's getting carried away, we'll keep our feet on the ground, look forward to the next game and try to win that.

"I think our performance was very good. We had some great opportunities to score more goals but to win 4-0, no matter who you're playing, is very pleasing.

"I think they're believing in each other, fighting for each other and that's what I want to see."

Despite bemoaning his own side's errors, Cheltenham boss Keith Downing was quick to salute Latics for their performance.

He said: "They're a good side. We'd said we were coming up against a team in form and full credit to Oldham.

"I don't want to do them a disservice because they did really well. I'm just disappointed with my team and the manner of the defeat.

"Mark Crossley made a good save to deny (Jennison) Myrie-Williams but I've no complaints. Oldham are a good side, I expect them to be in the top six at least.

"There's a good management team and they're obviously determined to improve on last year."
