Latics eye Jamaican international
21/ 7/2008
OLDHAM Athletic boss John Sheridan will look at Stoke City's Jamaican international Delmar Phillips with a view to a season-long loan.
The left-sided midfielder will spend the next fortnight at Boundary Park with Sheridan hopeful the 24-year-old could bring an end to his search for a player on that side.
With Kieran Lee injured, Chris Taylor and Kelvin Lomax are the only recognised players currently available to play on that side.
Sheridan said: "I was with Tony (Pulis, Stoke City manager) on the Pro Licence course over the summer and I appreciate him letting us have a look at Delmar.
"Hopefully he will do well and give me food for thought. He's played several times for Jamaica and played in the first team at Stoke on the left-hand side.
"I've said to Tony that it's a chance for him to get first-team football. If he impresses me, we can hopefully sort something out."
Phillips will figure in Athletic's pre-season friendlies at Grimsby Town on Saturday and against Derby County next Wednesday.
Saturday's game at Blundell Park will see the likes of Mark Crossley, Sean Gregan, Andy Liddell and Lee Hughes - all of whom sat out the 3-0 midweek win at Rhyl - involved as Sheridan seeks to hit on a winning formula ahead of the new season.
He said: "It's all about getting fitness, that's the aim of the game. I was pleased with the way we played (at Rhyl), we looked sharp and everything went well.
"It's going to be similar at Grimsby, the result doesn't really worry me. Everyone will be involved, including the lads who missed the Rhyl game."
