Whit a great signing

DANNY Whitaker has revealed that his decision to join Oldham was far from a difficult one – he made it on the strength of the manager’s former history as a player.

The midfielder had been targeted by a number of clubs but, once he heard of Latics’ boss John Sheridan’s interest, he couldn’t resist linking up with the former Republic of Ireland international.

Whitaker, who started as a trainee at Maccles-field and spent six years at the Moss Rose, moved to Port Vale in the summer of 2006. He leaves the Valiants – who were relegated to League Two last term – in order to stay in the third tier of English football.

"It was nice to know that three or four clubs were interested in me," Whitaker told the club’s official website.

"Then I was told that John Sheridan wanted me at Oldham and that was it really. My mind was made up almost on the spot when I heard that.

"As we were looking at the offers, John Sheridan phoned, and you don’t turn down someone who has played in two World Cups in your position.

"I’m sure he can improve my game and this is a club that’s looking forward. Latics are going places, John has already made a couple of shrewd signings."

The 27-year-old had been tempted by an improved offer from Vale boss Lee Sinnott, despite their drop into League Two and said: "They made me more than one offer, they have been fantastic with me.

"It was a good offer, he added. "One of the best they could put on the table, and me and Lee Sinnott got on fantastically well but I wanted to play at the highest level I possibly could.

"I had spent enough time in League Two with Macclesfield and I needed to stay in League One or even move up a division.

"I’m getting ready for pre-season now, I’m looking forward to it actually."

Sinnott, while disappointed not to keep hold of Whitaker, said: "I have nothing negative to say, Danny goes with my best wishes."
