GOALS from Deane Smalley and Lewis Alessandra saw Athletic end their home league campaign with another three points.

They struck in each half, condemning Cheltenham to another defeat and leaving the Robins facing a nervy last day in which to avoid relegation from League One.

After Alex Russell's free kick was narrowly wide for the visitors, Latics took a 16th minute lead when Smalley fired home after Craig Armstrong had cleared Matt Wolfenden’s lob off the line. Stefan Stam did likewise to deny Ashley Vincent at the other end as John Sheridan's side held the lead at half-time.

Having seen referee David Foster depart with an injury three minutes after the break, Latics were furious when his replacement awarded Town a penalty, harshly judging that Sean Gregan had barged into Shane Duff. Former Liverpool trainee Steven Gillespie duly sent Mark Crossley the wrong way from the spot, although the veteran kept Latics on level terms by denying Russell and Paul Connor.

Connor also had a shot blocked by Neal Eardley before Alessandra netted a fortuitous winner with four minutes remaining. His effort was saved at close range by Shane Higgs, only for the ball to rebound off Alessandra and into the net to earn Latics their fifth victory from their last six league games at Boundary Park.
