Sheridan says 'Sorry'

Gavin Browne

JOHN Sheridan issued an apology to the Oldham Athletic supporters who saw their side beaten 3-0 at Swindon Town last Saturday.

Latics' faint hopes of reaching the League One play-offs were more or less killed stone dead in Wiltshire thanks to second-half goals from Lee Peacock and Simon Cox (two).

Sheridan could barely contain his disappointment at the end of the game as 10 of the starting XI helped Athletic beat Huddersfield Town 4-1 seven days earlier.

He said: "I'm very, very frustrated considering what was at stake. We had a little chance of putting a bit of pressure on the teams at the top.

"I felt comfortable during the first half but we were embarrassing second half and I apologise to the supporters for our performance.

"I'm not going to stand for players performing like we did last week and then this week. I'll lose my job if we perform the way we did second half, I have to get players in who are consistent week in, week out.

"Second half, we didn't hold the ball up, didn't pass the ball or defend properly. The goals could have been avoided but we have no organisers; we're too quiet as a team.

"I've said to them that I've got to get a team or squad who's going to get us out of this division. Some have been in a comfort zone because they know they're going to play week in, week out."

The only bright spot for Athletic was that Sean Gregan and Andy Liddell both played after six months out with Achilles injuries. However, Liddell's return only came by way of injury to loanee Jason Jarrett with Sheridan downbeat about his chances of playing again this season.

He said: "Jason has a groin injury which I don't think is a couple of days. We aren't going to get in the play-offs so I've got to try and get one or two people in.

"I'm hoping one or two players might be back (for this week). We've just got to try and win as many games as we can; we know the play-offs are out of the question."

Sorry isn't good enough. We have gone backwards. His signings with one exception, Craig Davies have been poor. I am sick of hearing of the injury problems. Sheridan bought injury prone players eg Poglicomi. Its time for a change.Big Joe Royle, Paul Ince or Sammy Mcalroy please.

With comments of I now realise how key strikers are to win this division it beggers belief that we got this far. Chris Porter flattered his results last season, a player I might add he didn't sign.

The comments saying the boo boys should keep away from Oldham is also out of order.

People work hard to earn the money that pay his and the players wages and so are fully entitled to moan when performance are bway below par. As a result crowds have been poor this season and will remain so until a change in manager.
