JASON Jarrett's second-half strike gave Latics a point on a day when their injury jinx struck again.
Having lost John Thompson against Millwall, beleaguered boss John Sheridan saw Gary McDonald limp out of the warm-up with a groin injury, only for his replacement Matty Wolfenden to depart at half-time with a hamstring twinge.
While that was unfortunate for manager and player, at least Jarrett had the satisfaction of coming off the bench to score the equaliser 48 hours after suffering the ignominy of being substituted an hour after replacing Thompson.
It was one-time Latics transfer target Heffernan who opened the scoring eight minutes before half-time, lashing a shot into the roof of the net after Athletic had failed to deal with Gareth Roberts' free kick.
Trailing at the break, Latics saw Mark McCammon head narrowly wide for the home side before drawing level when Jarrett volleyed home.
Neal Eardley headed off the line to prevent Steve Roberts from giving Rovers the lead before Athletic were given what looked to be a huge slice of luck. David Livermore handballed Richie Wellens' shot, but fell to the ground clutching his face which was enough to persuade referee Darren Deadman to wave play on, much to the disgust of everyone connected with the Yorkshiremen.
James Hayter came closest to a winner for Rovers, heading against the woodwork with seven minutes remaining as Athletic held out for a point.
