Oldham Athletic 3 Tranmere Rovers 1

Gavin Browne
10/ 3/2008

GOALS from Neal Eardley, Chris Taylor and Lewis Alessandra ensured it was not a happy return to Boundary Park for ex-Latics boss Ronnie Moore.

The Tranmere manager, derided throughout by the home supporters, could only stand and watch in the pouring rain as his side were deservedly second best on the day.

Proceedings changed with two goals in four minutes leading up to half-time, the first coming when Ian Goodison brought Alessandra down inside the area on 37 minutes. Rovers' skipper injured himself in giving the penalty away, creating a four-minute delay while he was stretchered off, but it failed to distract Eardley from converting the penalty.

If that was bad enough for Tranmere, the second goal was even worse as Coyne struck a clearance against his own defender and saw the ball head towards his own net. Although the keeper scrambled back to push the ball onto the post, he could not prevent Taylor from tapping home number two.

With Latics the likelier side to score again, it was a surprise when  substitute Mike Jones capitalised on some indifferent defending to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes left.

However, Alessandra's maiden goal six minutes later gave Athletic the three points after he found Leon Constantine before tapping home the return pass.
