FEBIAN Brandy's 85th minute winner saw Latics succumb to their first defeat away from Boundary Park in 10 games.
The on-loan Manchester United striker kept the Welsh side 10 points clear at the top of League One, placing a shot past Mark Crossley.
A quiet first half gave way to a more entertaining second period as Swansea sought their first league win against Latics since 1980.
They took the lead midway through the second half when Gary McDonald, who had netted the winner at the Liberty Stadium, could only divert Jason Scotland's cross into his own goal.
However, Athletic were level 15 minutes from time when Craig Davies was brought down by Ferrie Bodde before sending Dorus De Vries the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Just as Latics looked set for a point, they gave the ball away and when they failed to clear Guillem Bauza's cross, Brandy kept his cool to ensure three points.
