Speed check sites boosted

MOBILE speed checkpoints could be appearing at new sites around the Valley.

Rossendale is to get an extra three places where mobile speed cameras can be used - and residents have been asked for their suggestions.

The borough currently has 14 fixed speed cameras and seven sites where one-off speed checks are carried out on a regular basis.

But from this year restrictions on these locations - called community concern sites - were lifted, meaning the Valley can now have 10 places for officers to set up their cameras.

The sites are usually located at accident blackspots and are aimed at reducing road casualties.

Rossendale's Community Safety Partnership has put forward 13 areas for consideration, including six new sites.

Community concern sites currently include Burnley Road East in Waterfoot; Rochdale Road, Britannia; New Line, Bacup; Todmorden Road, Bacup; Helmshore Road, Haslingden; Bolton Road North, Stubbins; and Burnley Road, Bacup.

The suggestions include Hud Hey Road, Haslingden; Newchurch Road, Rawtenstall; Burnley Road, Rawtenstall; Market Street, Facit; Market Street, Heale; and Haslingden Road, Rawtenstall.

Highways manager Brian Cook told a meeting of the Lancashire Local Rossendale committee on Tuesday, at Haslingden Community Link, that the areas - and any new ones suggested - would be competing for the cameras.

But he said it was highly likely that Hud Hey Road, which has long been a concern to residents, would be on the final list. Work on assessing the roads will run from now until the new year.

He said: 'I can't say how frequently the cameras will be at each site, but signage will be place in each area, which in itself acts as a deterrant.'

Councillor Judith Driver, who covers Greensclough ward, asked whether Todmorden Road and Burnley Road, Bacup, could be considered, adding: 'It's absolutely vital that we do slow traffic down in these areas.'

Helmshore councillor Brian Essex put forward Helmshore Road, Helmshore, near its junction with Free Lane.

He said: 'People are coming down there so fast they can't take the right turn.'

The new sites will be implemented from April.

I watch the traffic on the start of the 30mph speed limit at the top of Weir, thunder by at generally twice the speed limit. Lorries are out of control as they thunder down the hill, cars race to pass each other on the wrong side of the road both up and down the road. In short, the law is broken hundreds of times a day. Only fools walk on the pavement and the village is cut in two by a deadly road. Now the stupid decision to paint yellow lines to stop people parking outside the new community centre (which could possibly have slowed the traffic ) means that the ignorant and selfish speeders are free to continue. One day someone will be killed and the police and the council will be held to account. Put a speed camera at the top of Burnley Rd and give the village back to the residents.
fed up, Weir, Bacup
