Boxers in debut bouts

BOXING: THREE fighters based at Joe Pennington's Northside gym will make their professional debuts during a show at the Tara Leisure Centre, Shaw, on Sunday 7 October.

They are Tommy Heffron, Darren Askew and Dave Murray who feature on the under card along with Oldham's Shinny Bayaar and Shaw's Darren Stubbs.

Opponents have yet to be named.

Top of the bill will be a WBF world featherweight title bout between title holder Choi Tseveenpurev who boxes out of the Tara camp and Abdul Tebazalwa of Uganda.

WHILE Boxing Academy student Nicola Adams settles into the new term at Hopwood Hall College she is also preparing to head Stateside for an exhibition bout aimed at showcasing women's boxing for the Olympic committee.

Women's boxing appears on the agenda for the London Olympics in 2012, for the first time in the history of the Games, and Nicola, current Senior Women's ABA English champion, is tipped as a hopeful for a medal.

Bantamweight Nicola, 24, recently boxed in Hungary, losing by one point to Russian champion Sofiya Ochigava in the 54kg class.

Judges were so impressed by their skilful display that the girls have been invited to step into the ring once more in the USA.

Nicola said: "To think I could be a future Olympian feels almost unreal. I am so excited that I will be at the forefront of bringing the sport to the Olympics and putting women's boxing on the map."
