A disappointing finish

12/ 9/2007

ONLY Crompton of the borough's teams were victorious as the 2007 Lake Garage Central Lancashire League season came to a climax with a double-header last weekend.

Crompton ensured they were the highest-placed finishers of the four sides thanks to a seven-wicket victory over Littleborough at Hare Hill on Saturday.

Batting first, the home side were all out for 147, Simon Wright taking 5-34 for Crompton who replied with 148-3 in which overseas amateur Gajanand Singh made an unbeaten 83.

The following day saw the Glebe Street side lose their final game of the campaign by three wickets against Norden.

Singh top-scored with 36 as Crompton were all out for 164, a total which their visitors surpassed by three wickets in hand despite Singh returning figures of 4-61.

Oldham had a weekend to forget with the bat as they scored a combined total of 214 runs over both games.

Saturday saw them beaten by eight wickets as Middleton dismissed them for 124 before replying with 126-2, Stanworth and Ryan both recording unbeaten half-centuries.

It got worse on Sunday when they were then skittled for 90 in reply to Monton and Weaste's innings of 195-9.

If Oldham suffered with the bat, then it was Royton who found the going hard in the field with defeats against Milnrow and Clifton.

Although Guy Lovell took 5-66, Royton saw Milnrow's Karl Brown make 105 to guide them to 240 all out before Malik took 6-26 to have Royton dismissed for 97.

Sunday's game against Clifton was not a day for the bowlers as the home side racked up a mammoth 415-4, Jayasinghe smashing 181, before Royton replied with 288 all out in which Luke Procter top-scored with 80.

Werneth went down by four wickets against Rochdale on Saturday having been dismissed for 108, while Sunday saw them fall 42 runs short of securing victory against Heywood.

Sherwin Campbell's unbeaten 123 saw Heywood reach 268-6 before Alan Durose (60) and Mark Charlton (54) hit half-centuries and helped Werneth to 227-5.
