Leaders’ loss

9/ 7/2008

ARMSTRONGS Saddleworth and District Cricket League leaders Heyside were beaten by new boys Glodwick in last weekend’s latest round of league matches.

Glodwick professional Imran Aslam ended with figures of 6-20 as the pacesetters were all out for 92 batting first. In reply, Glodwick ensured the match was all over by 5.15pm as they reached 94-1 and left Heyside without a single bonus point.  That defeat allowed second-placed Uppermill to close the gap thanks to an easy victory over Greenfield at Leafield.

James Baron took 4-26 as Greenfield were all out for 125 before Zeeshan Khan struck an undefeated 84 as Uppermill ended on 127-0.

Shaw were also victorious in a low-scoring game as they prevailed by six wickets against Stayley. Shaun Dean returned figures of 4-19 as Shaw dismissed their opponents for 101, Gareth Harrop then hitting 27 as Shaw secured victory with a reply of 102-4.

Saddleworth recorded a narrow one-wicket victory in a high-scoring game at Austerlands. The home side batted first and compiled 199-9, Adam Young top-scoring with 57. However, Saddleworth reached their target for the loss of nine wickets as Steven Howard struck 87 in their innings of 200-9.

The highest individual score of the day came from Bamford Fieldhouse batsman Gerry Cassell, who made 144 in his side’s 209-2 at Hollinwood.  The Lime Lane side had earlier ended their innings on 208-9, a target which Bamford reached to move into third spot.

Elsewhere, Friarmere’s Zafar Igbal took his tally of runs for the season to 988 from 15 matches as his team routed Droylsden.  He made 128 not out as Friarmere rattled up 234-3 before dismissing the Tamesiders for 94, sealing a 140-run victory.

Sunday’s Tanner Cup semi-finals were both affected by the weather with no result possible.
