Staying inconsistent

2/ 7/2008

IT was a mixed weekend for Oldham with one victory and one defeat in their Lake Garage CLL matches.

The victory came at the Pollards on Saturday when they overcame Milnrow by five wickets.

Fielding first, Oldham skittled their visitors for 139 as Stuart Moore ended with figures of 5-52. The hosts’ reply saw them cruise to maximum points as they ended on 163-5, Nick Maree leading the way for Oldham with 45.

However, defeat came 24 hours later in a rain-affected match against Werneth at the Coppice. The game, reduced to 25 overs per side because of Sunday’s showers, saw Oldham struggling after they were restricted to 106-8 from their overs.

Abid Faisel-Masih proved to be Oldham’s top scorer with an innings of 32 as home professional Loku ended with 5-50.

In reply, Werneth looked to be heading to a comfortable victory before the loss of quick wickets saw them reduced to 89-5. Despite suffering from a case of the jitters, they managed to get across the finishing line in the penultimate over.

Werneth also suffered mixed fortunes having been beaten by 91 runs in their match at Radcliffe. The home side batted first and made 211-9, Ashraf Gorsi top-scoring with an unbeaten 101 despite four wickets for Werneth’s Andy Walker. The visitors’ reply saw them shot out for 120, Loku making 36 as Carl Sandri took 5-42 for the winners.

Saturday’s other league matches saw wins for Crompton and Royton from their respective encounters. Crompton proved to be too good for Clifton, recording a seven-wicket victory at Glebe Street as Javon Searles (5-59) and Kevin Stoute (4-19) saw the visitors dismissed for 98. In reply, Stoute and Darren Graham both made 35 as Crompton took maxmimum points by finishing on 101-3.

Royton enjoyed a conclusing 87-run win at bottom club Ashton where Luke Procter made 76 in their 192, Zafar Zaman taking 7-59 for the beleaguered home outfit. Dion Taljard starred with the ball when it was Royton’s turn to field, ending with 5-47 as Ashton were dismissed for 115, Sri Lankan professional Ian Daniel their top scorer with 35.
