Another soggy start

THE new Saddleworth and District Cricket League season opened in time honoured fashion last Sunday with plenty of rain.

There was no play for either of the Tameside teams as Droylsden’s match against Uppermill was rained off while Stayley had a free day.

Saddleworth’s game against Shaw was also a non-starter while champions Bamford Fieldhouse saw their match against Austerlands end in a draw because of the weather.

However, three matches were played to a finish as Hollinwood were seven-wicket winners against Greenfield, Asif Iqbal making an unbeaten 53 as they surpassed Greenfield’s 117 all out.

Steven Firth (88) and Roelof Hugo (66 not out) helped Heyside to a six-wicket victory against Friarmere who had earlier made 187-4, Zafar Iqbal hitting 136.

Moorside professional Alan Durose took 6-18 to help his side defeat visiting Glodwick.
