Hogg overshadows Flintoff’s return

KYLE Hogg took centre stage as Lancashire continued their preparations for the new season with a 58-run victory over Essex Eagles in the ARCH Arabian Cricket Challenge at Sharjah.
The all-rounder was named man-of-the-match, taking 4-29 from eight overs as the Eagles were dismissed for 197-9 in reply to Lancashire’s 255-9.
That total had been compiled courtesy of half-centuries from Iain Sutcliffe and Luke Sutton, while the returning Andrew Flintoff hit 39 from 51 deliveries on a flat wicket. However, the Lancashire attack rose to the challenge of defending that total, making the breakthrough when Simon Marshall trapped Jason Gallian LBW in the 11th over.
Hogg then took centre stage, bowling a double-wicket maiden in his first over by claiming the scalps of Ravi Bopara and James Foster, both men caught behind by Sutton. That made the score 58 -3 before Essex skipper Mark Pettini perished 27 runs later, hitting Steven Croft to Mark Chilton at mid-off.
Marshall and Gary Keedy chipped in with another two wickets apiece, but it was Hogg who ended proceedings.
Having bowled Ryan Ten Doeschate, Hogg claimed the final wicket when Alex Tudor’s attempted pull was held by the diving Flintoff on the boundary to secure victory.
Having defeated the UAE in their opening game last Friday, Lancashire faced further matches against Sussex Sharks (Wednesday) and Yorkshire Carnegie (Friday), both of which were due to be played in Abu Dhabi.
