Newell’s national award

ROYTON teenager John Newell earned his reward for boxing clever when he was named as the junior novice ABA champion.
The 15-year-old North Chadderton School pupil recorded an 11-2 points win against Midlands fighter Daniel McDickinson in the 70-kilo section final.
Newell, who trains at Ancoats ABC, was praised by trainer, Failsworth’s Sean Rafferty.
He said: "I’m well pleased to say the least, John did awfully well but to be honest, I was always confident that he’d do something."
Newell won five qualifying rounds to reach last weekend’s final, held in Essex.
He will now aim to take the novice victory into his next competition.
Rafferty added: "The next step is later in the season when he’ll go into the open juniors. That takes place early in 2009 with the final taking place about May time."
