FAILSWORTH’S Craig Watson insists he cannot see himself surrendering his Commonwealth welterweight title to Matthew Hatton when the two face each other on Saturday.

Watson makes the first defence of his title at the City of Manchester Stadium on the undercard of the Ricky Hatton-Juan Lazcano contest and will be shown live on Sky Box Office during the build-up.

Watson-Hatton would be a bill-topping fight on most other occasions but the champion is unconcerned about facing the brother of a man that 55,000 people have gone to support.

Watson said: "I’m really looking forward to this one. The last week or so has been about sharpness really and I’m putting 350 punches per round together. I’ve never felt so sharp and fast in my life.This fight would top a lot of bills on Sky Sports and I like the fact it’s going out live on Sky Box Office. I think everyone’s going to watch it anyway because of Ricky Hatton but hopefully they’ll see me as well and, you never know, maybe one day I could have bigger crowd than normal supporting me."

The younger Hatton challenges Watson for the belt after 37 fights as a professional which has seen him become the IBF international champion as well as fight on bills in Las Vegas and Monte Carlo.

Despite that, Watson believes he represents a step up in class and will perform accordingly.

He said: "When he gets in the ring he’s going to have to answer a few questions. I think I’m too smart and too quick but we’ll see how it goes."
