A ROYTON teenager is on the verge of national success after reaching the final of a prestigious boxing tournament.
Fourteen-year-old John Newell, of Flake Lane, defeated Thomas Rawlinson in the Royal Navy Golden Gloves 66kg semi-final at Liverpool’s Austin Rawlinson Sports Centre.
Newell, trained by Sean Rafferty at Ancoats ABC, now heads to Knottingley this weekend for the final, backed by sister Sonia May.
She said: "We’ve said all along that we don’t dispute his talent. He’s got the skill as a boxer but the only thing that would have held him back was he didn’t have the animal instinct – he hurts someone and he has a conscience!
"As his sister, I work at the local youth centre and see a lot of young lads the same age as John who make me so grateful he trains so hard with his boxing as opposed to hanging around on street corners.
"We’re so proud of him though, I think a bit of encouragement goes a long way. It can be a bit nervewracking watching him, but I’ve never for one minute thought that he lacked any ability."
Rafferty added: "John has only been boxing for two years and he’s done very well to reach the finals. He is such a nice lad and works so hard that he deserves all the success that he gets."
