Watson is a wanted man
19/12/2007
MATTHEW Hatton is targeting a fight with Commonwealth welterweight champion Craig Watson.
While Oldham fighter Watson was busy dispossessing Ali Nuumbembe of the title at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena, Hatton recorded his 33rd victory from 37 fights Stateside.
He defeated Frankie Santos on points on the undercard of brother Ricky’s fight against Floyd Mayweather Jnr in Las Vegas.
Having previously tried to agree a fight with Nuumbembe’s camp when the Glossop-born Namibian held the Commonwealth belt, Hatton has no qualms about facing Watson instead.
The British Boxing Board of Control had lined up Hatton and Watson to fight for the English title, only to halt proceedings once Watson had beaten Nuumbembe.
He said: "I found out a couple of days after I fought that Ali had been beaten and I was very surprised, because even though Craig Watson is a good fighter, I thought Ali would be a bit too much for him.
"Ideally I’d like to box again at the end of March. If we can’t do anything about Kell Brook being made the mandatory British challenger, the fight I want is Watson."
