OLDHAM boxer Craig Watson hopes everything will be elementary when he challenges Commonwealth welterweight champion Ali Nuumbembe next month.
The 24-year-old faces the Glossop-based Namibian at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena on December 8 as part of Sky Sports’ build-up to Ricky Hatton’s fight with Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas.
Having atoned for a points defeat against John Fewkes with four consecutive wins, Watson believes Nuumbembe will be a tough opponent.
He said: "He’s had around 150 amateur fights and this will be the toughest fight of my life but I think I’ve got the tools to beat him," which is a view shared by Watson’s trainer, Clayton-based Joe Pennington.
He claimed: "Craig is like a throwback fighter, he’s tough, hard and will spar with anybody including heavyweights, he’s always done it, he doesn’t get hurt and he can handle anyone.
"Ali’s very upright and when he throws punches he lunges and I think Craig can counter-punch him and put pressure on him.
"We’re not going into this thinking Craig can get beat, we’re going in for the win."
