Frances needs help to find old friend
Helen Clifton28/12/2005
AN OLDHAM native wants to enlist Advertiser readers in providing her with the best New Year and 60th birthday present she could hope for - a reunion with one of her oldest friends.
Frances Copus, 59, lives in Weybridge, Surrey, and first met Stuart Pendry, also known as 'Nab', when she was a 14-year-old student at Oldham Technical College.
It has now been 30 years since she last saw him, after moving to London to get married, but as her 60th birthday approaches she is keen to track down one of her oldest pals.
Frances' birthday is on January 30, 2006, and Stuart's will be a day earlier on January 29.
"There is so much to say after 30 years! He could have been married four times for all I know," she said.
"I think when you have had a good friend from when you are very young, you really do miss them."
Frances, whose maiden name was Carter, grew up on Barlow Street near Alexandra Park, while Stuart was from the Failsworth area, where his parents owned a fishing tackle shop.
The pair became inseparable upon first meeting at college, and their relationship blossomed into romance with the pair getting engaged when Frances was 19 and Stuart was 18.
But although the engagement was short-lived, lasting less than a year, their friendship remained strong and continued until Frances got married and eventually moved to the Cobham area of Surrey, where she has lived for around 30 years.
Soon after Frances got married, Stuart went to South Africa's Sun City to work as a croupier in a casino, which made it difficult for the pair to keep in touch.
Frances said: "We wanted to keep in touch but it was really difficult.
"He did get engaged - I believe to a girl called Maureen."
Now divorced, Frances has three sons, aged 30, 28 and 26, and runs a clothing shop in Weybridge where she has lived for the past four years - although she has had the shop for 14 years.
She said: "The last time I saw Stuart was when my eldest son was born. He just turned up with a present at my door.
"But his profession could mean he is anywhere.
"I think his mother remarried and is now called Mrs Pendry-Thomas, and I assume she lives in the Failsworth area."
- IF anyone knows of Stuart Pendry, they can get in touch with The Advertiser on 0161 626 3663 and we will then be able to put them in touch with Frances.

Got an opinion you want to share?
I don't know where Stuart is now but he did a couple of freelance events for us about 8 years ago and was living near Leicester. I have a telephone number for him which is now unobtainable. This might help a little but if you manage to track him down would you ask him to get in touch with us ? He was a lovely guy and I would just like t know he's OK.
Kind regards
