DEMOLITION work has started to prepare the work for the new Sainsbury's Supermarket on South Union Street.

Leader of Oldham Council, Cllr Richard Knowles, was on hand to see the former office block Oliver House begin to be pulled down.

The move heralds the beginning of work on the 90,000 sq ft development at the corner of Clegg Street. Sainsbury's is presently on Bloom Street.

Cllr Knowles said: "I am absolutely delighted to be actively involved in the start of building work. The demolition of Oliver House is very symbolic as it clears the way for this exciting and important development to take place.

"Not only will this development allow us to breathe new life into this once run down area but it will also be a major boost to the town centre helping to attract visitors and shoppers."
