Mark followed his nose to TV fame

31/ 1/2007

AN OLDHAM musician has found fame by using a rather unusual instrument - his nose.

Mark Goodwin recorded a song in his bedroom using his hands, mouth and nose and then posted it online on his own internet blog.

Within a few weeks the 27-year-old was astonished to be contacted by a television producer who wanted to screen it on a new Channel 4 show.

And that was just the start, as Mark has since gone on to make three TV appearances inside a week.

Mark, a piano salesman, from Dogford Road, Royton, who holds a music degree from Leeds University, said: "I have been doing the blog since 2004 as a bit of a hobby.

"Sometimes I like to do comic videos which amuse me and the nose trumpet seemed like a good idea at the time."

Mark utilises a strange way of arranging his hands to produce notes through his nose.

It results in a bizarre tune of pops, squirts, squeaks and nasal humming which is strangely musical.

But Mark - whose homemade video was sniffed out by the TV producers on his personal website at www.yonner.co.uk - warns the feat it is not as easy as it looks.

"There wasn't a lot of time to play the nose trumpet on the classical music course I did, but I kept it up in my spare time and learned how to hold a tune eventually," he said.

"It hurts the ears and you have to be very careful because you can perforate your eardrums if you are not careful."

Mark's video - which culminates with his 'Nasal Rhapsody' masterpiece - appeared this week on a new C4 series called 'Homemade TV'.
