SIR Alex Ferguson took a break from his concerns about the future of his star player Ronaldo to officially open The Radclyffe School in Chadderton on Tuesday.

The long-serving Manchester United manager was highly impressed with the £30m Specialist Technology College, which boasts interactive whiteboards and digital projectors in every room, 30 dedicated ICT classrooms, two sports halls, indoor and outdoor running tracks, an amphitheatre and a host of specialist learning spaces including dance, drama and music studios.

More than 400 specially invited guests, staff and students were entertained by a high-tech presentation as well as singers and dancers from the school. After making a speech, Sir Alex unveiled a plaque and was taken on a short tour of the school before mingling with students and guests.

Headteacher Hardial Hayer said: "It is fitting that Sir Alex is opening our school. The Radclyffe School’s outstanding achievements at GCSE in the recent past have been nationally recognized and we aim to be to secondary education what Manchester United is to the Premiership – our clear goal is to be the best secondary school in the country."

At the end of the proceedings Sir Alex was presented with artwork made by students and a piece of ceramic work commissioned by head of art, Alison Taylor.

I would like to point out that Alex Ferguson did not mingle with students as he left straight after unveiling the plaque. All students were eagerly waiting for him to take photographs etc in the street, but then we were told that he had left. What a waste of a day?
