Oldham Carnival - picture special

IT MAY have been a wet weekend, but Oldham Carnival was far from being a wash-out.

The fun started with the traditional parade, featuring 18 floats designed by local community groups and dance troupes from across the borough.

Thousands of people then descended on Alexandra Park to sample the entertainment which included a Viking living history and combat show, a karaoke championship, the third annual UK dance troupe competition and a live bird show.

Music was provided by award-winning artist, Magnet Man, who performed the official UNICEF Bremen Schools for Africa campaign song, Eskape to the Muzic for Africa.

Other well-known acts included recent Britain’s Got Talent contestant, belly dancer Sophie Mei, and stunt comedy escapologist Rob Roy Collins.

Local musical talent helped to provide the soundtrack to the two-day event with performances from rock, pop and urban acts on the main stage, and a further 11 bands on the Lion’s Den stage.

Paul Davies, secretary of Oldham Carnival management group said: "This year’s carnival far exceeded our expectations and was definitely the best so far since the carnival was resurrected in 2006.

"There was a great turnout on both days and even though it initially poured down on Sunday, the sun soon came out and the crowds came back."
