Emotional return to the Latics for Ernie

14/ 5/2008

AROUND 1,500 well-wishers turned out for Ernie Cooksey’s Benefit Game at Boundary Park on Sunday.

Organisers were delighted to raise an estimated £11,000 towards the ex-Latics player’s treatment for malignant melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer – which is expected to cost around $100,000 US.

There is no known cure for the cancer, but the treatment could extend the life of the dad-to-be by a significant period.

The on-the-field action provided plenty of thrills with appearances from Ernie’s former team-mates, ex-footballers like Chris Waddle and Luther Blissett, plus TV stars from ‘Coronation Street’.

Also present were fans from all of Ernie’s former clubs, who provided the midfielder with an emotional reception when he was introduced by a guard of honour – formed by both teams – before kicking the game off.

The match ended in an entertaining 4-4 draw before Ernie’s team beat a John Sheridan XI in a penalty shoot-out.

Organiser Martin Thomas said: "Unlike a normal testimonial this day was something totally different – everyone there had such affection for Ernie, which made for a heart-warming atmosphere.

"Ernie kept saying how overwhelmed he was it by it all. He was gobsmacked that people had gone to so much trouble for him. It was very emotional."

More fundraising events are planned for Ernie:
Rochdale FC hold a Race Night at Spotland on Saturday, May 24. Admission is £5.
There is ‘An Audience with Andy Ritchie’ at St Anne’s Rugby Club on Sunday, July 6. Starting at 1pm it includes a comedian and sports auction. Admission is £10.
