What's in Fletcher's Mill and is it safe?

James Ferguson
31/10/2007

ATTEMPTS to find out whether poisonous chemicals which could be a threat to public health have contaminated the Fletcher’s Mill site have been met with a wall of silence.

Worries about the site’s safety were exacerbated when it was revealed intruders had broken in to the mill and had posted pictures on the internet.

Im not sure that this story is as full blown as it seems. If you check the said web site, there are some quite interesting reports. These arent just some kids looking to cause damage, or steal. The majority seem to arm themselves with a few hundred pounds worth of camera equipment and have a solid commitment to taking photos and recording sites like "Flechers Mill". Also with the current Health and Safety laws (COSHH etc) in place, i find it hard to believe such containers could be so dangerous, and left in place. If as stated, it is as dangerous as you make it out to be, surely something should be done to imporve this and not just accuse the "explorers". Im not saying that tresspassing is good, and that this isnt dnagerous, but i think your report makes these talented "explorers" seem like criminals, when actually there just keeping themselves from getting into things like drink, drugs and mugging old women and hanging around the streets by looking into interesting and beautiful sites which may not be with us for much longer. Surely from a historic point of view, they are doing a good job of archiving places of which the majority have never seen, or for the people who used to work there keep some memories of their past. Maybe you should think about what conclusion you bring to your report, things are not always as simple as they make out to be. I only hope you did nothing illegal like un-otherised use of photo's, copyright is a big thing these days.

P.s. Great paper, keep up the good work.
