Salon strictly for kids

Channel M's Jemma Gofton
16/ 7/2008

IT'S that time of the year again where the swimming pool is full of kids dive bombing you and you can't get near the cash desks in Primark. Yes, school's out for summer.

So the Style In The City team decided to teach our small people about looking good. Over the next six weeks we will be finding out about the most stylish parties, clothes and all things gorgeous for kids.

We kicked off filming by paying a visit to the hairdresser. Mums everywhere will be rocking gently as they remember the fidgety scissor-slipping nightmare of last time. Well, fear no more, because we have hunted down a kids-only hair salon.

The ethos of Snip Snaps in Altrincham is make it fun, fun, fun.

We took along children of all ages to really put them to the test. The two older girls of 11 were treated to a pamper session that involved nail painting and make-up. A couple of the boys got trims and then persuaded their mums they should have it moulded into a mohican and sprayed green and red. The younger models were persuaded to stay still by using distraction techniques, all common sense but not necessarily used in adult salons. We left the hairdresser's freshly trimmed, sprayed, accessorised and not a single tear was shed.

As you know, my weeks veer from one extreme to another and I spent the weekend at Chester Racecourse hosting a face of the future competition. It was a huge event organised by Tommy's Hair Company, with would-be models from all over the north west and Wales.

Greater Manchester didn't let me down and was well represented - although as the compere I was totally impartial. Anyway, there was a lovely twist at the end of the night when a gorgeous young man was announced as The Face Of The Future.

Luke Raiwey not only won an exotic holiday and a bucket full of spending money, he also gets an introduction to Premier Model Management. These are the people who helped build the careers of super models Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington.

I know that Luke will go onto bigger and better things and I am excited that his first big moment is on Channel M's Style In The City. So, don't miss his debut tonight at 8pm because in my opinion we have discovered the male equivalent of Agyness Deyn.
