The big picture: toilet humour
Conrad Astley5/ 5/2006
YOU often expect to find a hastily-scribbled cartoon on the door
to a toilet cubicle, but things are slightly different at The
Lowry. The Salford arts centre is using toilet cubicle doors to
display work by its latest star attraction.
The centre is launching it first ever cartoonist in residence - the
award-winning Tony Husband - and visitors can catch him scribbling
new creations today (Friday).
The cartoonist will be returning to the Salford arts centre on May
29, but anyone who misses his visits can still enjoy his work,
which will be displayed throughout the arts centre from tomorrow
(Saturday).
Eighty of Tony's cartoons, including many which he will create
while at The Lowry, will be put up in poster frames throughout the
centre - 101 of which will be on the back of toilet cubicle
doors.
Tony, who lives in Hyde, is best known for his work with Private
Eye - particularly for the long running Yobs cartoon - and he also
draws daily cartoons for The Times' sport section.
During his long career, his work has also appeared in publications
including The Sunday Express, The Daily Express, The Spectator,
Golf International, Manchester United Magazine and, of course,
Playboy.
He has published more than 20 cartoon books which have been
translated into German, Russian, Chinese and Welsh, and along with
Patrick Gallagher and Mark Rodgers he created the children's comic
Oink! and a 1980s Children's ITV series called Round The
Bend.
The series, which was a parody of Saturday morning magazine shows
set in a sewer, featuring puppets made by team which made them for
Spitting Image, but was cancelled following complaints by Mary
Whitehouse's National Viewers' And Listeners' Association about the
coarseness of its humour.
He has also co-written a screenplay with Rory McGrath and has been
involved in a series of live shows with Barnsley poet Ian
McMillan.
Since becoming a full time cartoonist in 1984, he has been given a
string of awards including Joke Cartoonist Of The Year three times
in a row and Sports Cartoonist Of The Year.
Tony will be in The Lowry Galleries today (Friday) and Bank
Holiday Monday, May 29, creating cartoons, so you can drop in and
catch him in the act. His witty cartoons will be displayed from
Monday.
